Why Do We Feel Stuck When We Know We Want Something More?

Have you ever had a persistent feeling that there is something more waiting for you, but you just can’t seem to figure out what it is?

You know something feels unsettled. The life you’ve built may be good, but there is a quiet voice in the background constantly asking, What’s next?

And then come the heavy questions:

  • What am I supposed to do?

  • Where do I go from here?

  • How do I take a step forward when I don’t even know what direction I’m heading?

I hear these questions often from women in mid-life. These are women who have spent decades building careers, caring for families, supporting others, and doing exactly what was expected of them. Now, something inside them is asking to be heard.

But because they don’t have a crystal-clear answer, they assume they are stuck.

I see it differently. Maybe you’re not stuck. Maybe you’re just in transition.

The Power of the Pause

I often remind my clients of a simple truth: You are exactly where you’re supposed to be at any given point in time.

Not because everything feels easy or because you have all the answers. But because this season—the uncertainty, the questions, the searching—is a necessary part of your journey.

We live in a culture that celebrates constant movement and endless hustle. But growth doesn't always happen through striving. A seed does not become a flower by forcing itself to grow faster; it grows because it has the right conditions to take root beneath the soil.

Sometimes growth happens quietly, in the dark, when we give ourselves permission to pause.

When we try to rush through the seasons of life we don't understand, we short-circuit the process. The first step forward isn’t doing more. It is acceptance.

  • Acceptance of where you are right now.

  • Acceptance that you don’t have clarity yet.

  • Acceptance that rest and reflection are not signs of failure—they are where clarity begins.

The first step forward isn’t doing more. It is acceptance.

Shift from Striving to Curiosity

Perhaps this season is not asking you to have everything figured out. Perhaps it is simply asking you to become curious. You don’t need to see the entire path to begin walking it. Give yourself permission to be right where you are, and trust that the next step will appear exactly when you are ready to take it.

Reflection:  If you are feeling stuck - instead of asking "What should I do?" try a gentler question: "What is this season inviting me to explore?"

Action:  To help you navigate this, try and use the The Curiosity Compass tool below.

Tool:  The curiosity compass:  This week, set aside 10–15 minutes with a journal, a quiet walk, or a cup of coffee, and use these four prompts as your guide:

  • What is calling my attention? What ideas, interests, conversations, or books keep showing up in your life right now? What parts of yourself have you been ignoring?

  • What gives me energy? What activities, experiences, or topics make you feel the most like you?

  • What am I ready to release? What expectations, roles, obligations, or old beliefs no longer fit who you are becoming?

  • What is one small step I can take? Not the whole five-year plan. Not the final destination. Just the very next right step.
