Surprises That Make You Smile:

Life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. This morning, I found myself on an impromptu beach walk that led to an unexpected sight—about 50 coconuts, each painted with different cute faces, sitting behind a piece of driftwood with the word "BELIEVE" painted on it. In front of the sign were hundreds of shells, each with short messages written by strangers (who had access to markers left in a cup and blank shells piled nearby). I took a moment to write my own: "Let your light shine bright."

This simple yet profound scene made me smile and reflect on the many times in my life when unexpected surprises brought joy. It reminded me that life is full of small moments that can make us smile—if we choose to see them. And these moments, though fleeting, often have a deeper connection to our personal growth and transformation.

Just like my beach walk, life offers us unexpected moments that, when we approach them with an open heart, can guide us toward personal growth. As a coach, I help clients build the skills to recognize these moments—whether it's a surprising opportunity or a small joy—so they can notice the little surprises along the way, using them as stepping stones on their journey toward what they are seeking.

Trusting the Process

At times, the path we’re on might seem unclear. But the surprises life throws our way are often exactly what we need at the right moment. Trusting the process—whether in our careers, relationships, or personal development—opens us up to beautiful discoveries. The key is believing in the journey, even when we don’t know exactly where it’s leading.

A simple way to contribute to clarity while trusting the process is through gratitude. As Tony Robbins says, “Energy flows where attention goes.” By recognizing the small wins and unexpected moments—like a line of coconuts with a message to "BELIEVE" or a thoughtful message from a friend acknowledging something you did that made a difference—we stay focused on the positive. These joyful surprises motivate us toward greater success and fulfillment.

Ultimately, many of these surprises come from the connections we make with others. Whether it's with family, friends, or clients, the relationships we nurture are a powerful source of joy and growth. As we continue our personal development journeys, it’s essential to celebrate the small moments that bring us closer together.

Embracing JOMO Over FOMO

In a world that constantly bombards us with notifications, invitations, and the pressure to “keep up,” it’s easy to fall into FOMO—the fear of missing out. We feel the need to be everywhere, do everything, and say “yes” to every opportunity. But sometimes, true joy comes from stepping back and embracing JOMO—the joy of missing out.

When I took my beach walk this morning, it wasn’t planned, and it certainly wasn’t part of any bigger agenda. But by allowing myself the space to just be present—without distractions from schedules or obligations—I was able to truly soak in the moment. This is what JOMO is all about: choosing to miss out on the noise of the world to reconnect with what truly matters to you. It’s about embracing stillness, quiet reflection, and the simple pleasures that make life feel rich and meaningful.

In coaching, I guide clients toward recognizing the difference between the “hustle culture” that fuels FOMO and the peace that comes with JOMO. When we give ourselves permission to slow down and say “no” to what doesn’t serve us, we create space for the unexpected joys hiding in plain sight. It’s in these quiet, unscheduled moments where the most profound growth often occurs.

Reflection:  What unexpected surprises have recently brought a smile to your face?

Action: Over the next week, set up a couple of “joy rides.” Block off some time in your schedule and do something that fills your soul. Take some time to notice how you feel after doing something special for yourself. Afterward, send me an email telling me what you did and how this felt!
