RIGHT TRIBE: Like-minded people
The Blue Zones research suggests that one of the most powerful things you can do to change your lifestyle for the better is to surround yourself with like minded people. For the longest lived people of the Blue Zones, it comes naturally.
Social connectedness is built into the different Blue Zones groups. Okinawans have created moais (groups originally created out of financial necessity, but endure as mutual support networks). Sardinians finish their day connecting with friends at the local bar and celebrate with annual grape harvests and village festivals requiring the whole community to help out. Seventh-day Adventists are connected through their religious practices and healthy lifestyle routines.
Lisa Berkman, a professor at Harvard University investigated social connectedness and longevity. In one study performed over a period of nine years, she found that higher social connectedness led to greater longevity. The type of social connectedness was not important as long as there was connection!
One way we all connect is through food! This month’s plant slant recipe is Ina Garten’s Roasted Eggplant Spread. Invite your friends to get together and have everyone bring a healthy appetizer to share or have a game night or set up a time to take a walk. Sometimes it’s hard to “find your people” or locate your “tribe.” Part of the process of finding your “tribe” or your “people” is to learn about yourself. By identifying your values and what fills your soul, you will gain knowledge about what you want to bring into your life and who you want to connect with.
Reflection: How can you eliminate the hustle from your life and downshift enough to reflect on what fills your soul? When and how do you feel most grounded? What type of things do you love to do that you just can’t find the time to do?
Action: Over the next few weeks, reach out and connect with someone through a shared interest. Attend a meetup or sign up for a class or make time with friends to do something from your reflection above. Take action even though the outcome may be uncertain!
